Criteria For Finding The Top Medical Schools
|
If you're just interested in earning your license is a medical doctor, then it doesn't matter which medical school to attend. However, consider this fact -- graduates from the top medical schools almost always are excepted into one of their top three residency choices, and the networking opportunities available at the graduation are enhanced when you attend a top medical school. Of course, different medical schools will appeal to different students, based on their specific needs and circumstances. So with that in mind, instead of giving you a generic list, I will give you some criteria which you can use to evaluate different choices for yourself, when considering the top medical schools to apply to. First, you want to hear what students have to say about the medical school itself. Naturally, if you talk to many students through our enthusiastic and happy with their medical school, it's a good indicator. Also, talk to the residency directors, and get their feedback of their experience with the medical school as well. In addition, you want to seek records on both the average undergraduate grade point average, as well as the average MCAT score from the students who attended that medical school. This will show you the level of education you're likely to receive. Also, consider the school's acceptance rate. If it has a high acceptance rate, that is not a good sign -- the top medical schools would be hard to get into, not easy. For example, Harvard University has only a 4.7% acceptance rate. Furthermore, you want to make sure the school is getting good funding for research grants. This will ensure you're on the cutting edge of the latest medical research and technology, so not only can you get an education, but you can experience what's going on currently in the field of medicine. Look at the student to faculty ratio as well. The lower the number the better. For example, John Hopkins University averages 4.7 students per faculty member. When numbers are low like this, you can be sure to always get personalized help if needed. The top medical schools will always have a low number of student to faculty ratio. So when evaluating the top medical schools, consider some of the criteria I have outlined above. It is a great way to compare one school to another, to get a fair assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of each. By being aware of all this information, it will help you make the right choice when considering the top medical schools to apply to.
