There are certain requirements involved with being accepted into pre-medical schools.  Not everyone is accepted, and different pre-medical schools have different standards.  Yet, there are some are rules you should follow to make sure you are positioned to be accepted into the premedical schools of your choice.  In this article, we will discuss some of those requirements.

First of all, let's get up to date on pre-medical schools.  Not too long ago, if you were a science major it was almost impossible for you to go to a medical school.  In fact, college advisors would often tell undergrads to stick with premedical fields such as biology, chemistry and physics, to help the chances to be accepted into med school.

This outdated thinking is no longer true. In fact, most medical schools today are encouraging students to instead pursue more liberal arts, and their passions instead of trying to fit a standard protocol.  In fact, the depth of your schoolwork and coursework is now considered more important than the area you studied.

However, there are some things you do need, that haven't changed.  For example, you have to prove you can handle the science coursework required at medical school.  Biology, inorganic and organic chemistry, physics and english are the basic requirements that most premedical schools ask for.

In addition, don't expect the weak grade point average to fly.  Generally, admissions officers are looking for a high grade point averages in both sciences and overall.  A smart goal to aim for is anything over 3.5.  For example, almost 50% of those accepted into pre-medical schools have a GPA of 3.5 or greater, while only 2% have been accepted with a GPA under 2.5.

Equally important is your score on the MCAT.  In a 2001 study, the average student accepted in the medical school at a score of 9.5 on verbal reasoning, 10.0 on physical sciences, 10.1 on biological sciences and a P on the writing sample.

Additionally, you can strengthen your application by doing volunteer work in the community, and other extracurricular activities to demonstrate you are a well-rounded and develop individual.

Pre-medical schools are not that hard to get accepted to, if you follow the criteria given above.  Simply apply yourself, and said some goals so you can meet the standards required to gain entrance into the school of your choice.  With a little bit of planning, some discipline and hard work, there is no reason why you should not be able to achieve your goals.
